Frequently asked questions about The Typing Works, specialist UK academic and business transcription services.

No. The Typing Works does not use AI. Our transcription and translation work is 100% human. We have a strict AI usage policy, which is available here. The problem with using AI for transcription is that firstly AI hallucinates and transcribes what it thinks you want to see, and secondly your data is not secure or private.

AI models are designed to make a good guess as to what users want and this means that even where the model has no idea what words are being spoken, it will still attempt to transcribe them. There have been a number of studies where the AI transcription tools have added in text to audio transcription based on what the tool thinks the listener wants to hear, rather than what was actually said.

Also, any data you upload to AI to transcribe is not secure. Large Language Models (LLM) use all the data they can to train for better accuracy. Data cannot be guaranteed to remain within the UK (or the EU).

For all of the above reasons, a lot of academic institutions have banned the use of AI transcription tools at this time.
