Sensitive recordings need careful handling, accurate transcription and the right people. The Typing Works has transcribers who hold National Security Vetting clearance through United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV), alongside our usual DBS checks.
The Typing Works has passed its Cyber Essentials assessment. Our assessor has finished grading our answers and confirmed our successful result.
An hour-long meeting can produce a few pages of minutes or a transcript running to thousands of words. Both can be useful, but whether to choose transcription vs meeting minutes depends on the purpose.
Recorded board meetings, management discussions, webinars, workshops and online meetings can contain expert commentary, explanations of complex subjects, answers to common customer questions and discussions about developments within an industry.
At The Typing Works, my role covers far more than simply receiving recordings and sending back transcripts. I am involved in managing projects from start to finish, supporting our transcribers, carrying out quality control, answering client enquiries and continually looking for ways to improve the service we provide.
Recording quality, speaker identification, terminology and clear instructions can all affect the accuracy of the finished transcript. Spending a little time preparing audio for transcription can make transcription easier, reduce the number of unclear sections and give you a more useful document for qualitative analysis.
Long before I worked in transcription, I was an avid reader and fascinated by the way language could change the meaning of an argument, alter the tone of a conversation or make an idea stay with you long after you had finished reading it.
Online learning has transformed the way people access education and professional development. Students can now attend lectures, seminars, training sessions and conferences from almost anywhere. However, watching or listening to online content is not always the most effective way to absorb and retain information.
Academic research frequently involves people sharing personal experiences, professional opinions, sensitive information and, in some cases, details they have never disclosed publicly. When an interview, focus group or research discussion is sent for transcription, responsibility for that information extends beyond the researcher and their institution to the transcription provider handling the recording.
High quality audio is the foundation of an accurate transcript. Even the most skilled transcriber can only work with what they hear, and poor audio can lead to delays, errors, and increased costs. At The Typing Works, we work with a wide range of clients across academic, clinical, corporate, and public sector settings, and we see the same audio problems appear time and again. Fortunately, most of them are easy to prevent with a little planning.
