At The Typing Works, we have a rigorous recruitment process when hiring new transcribers. Due to the nature of transcription work, candidates must have an exceptionally keen ear for interpreting spoken words, a strong command of the English language (we only hire native English speakers for our English-English transcription work), and a solid work ethic.
Being a transcriber is no simple task. It can be tedious, requires substantial focus, and involves long hours at a computer (or standing, if preferred). Some of our transcribers have been with us for over 15 years, handling numerous research projects and contracts. However, we are always looking for high-quality transcribers to expand our capacity.
What does our hiring process involve?
First, we only seek UK-based native English speakers. We do not recruit transcribers from abroad nor outsource work to overseas companies. Over time, we’ve observed the rise of transcription companies in countries like India, South Africa, and Kenya, but their accuracy levels have been comparable to automated transcription services, such as Rev.
Second, we assess the technical skills of every candidate. A basic level of IT proficiency is required to download recordings and upload transcriptions. We verify this through a detailed application form that evaluates their abilities and knowledge.
We also review each applicant’s CV. The majority of our transcribers are former legal and medical secretaries, but we also welcome graduates, parents, and semi-retired individuals who seek flexible work opportunities.
The Typing Works Test – Sample Transcription
A key part of our application process involves assigning a sample transcription task to each candidate, as if it were a real client job. Every applicant receives the same task, regardless of their previous experience. This allows us to filter out individuals who may think transcription is suitable for them but discover during the task that it is not.
The entire application process takes around 45 minutes, including the sample transcription. We carefully review each submission to determine if the applicant meets our strict accuracy and performance criteria.
After evaluating application forms, CVs, and the sample transcription, we assign a small job to successful candidates. You might think that after this process, any unsuitable candidates would have realised transcription isn’t for them. However, we still need to further filter out those who cannot meet our high standards or turnaround times. At this point, approximately 50% of transcribers are removed from our roster. Although this may seem harsh after an intensive process, we compensate them for the initial task and inform them that no further work will be assigned.
We can usually tell early on whether a candidate will meet our expectations, and this becomes evident through the two-stage assessment process.
Long Term Relationships Sought
Once transcribers have successfully completed the process, we aim to work with them long-term. As mentioned earlier, many of our transcribers stay with us for years. We reward those who demonstrate commitment and quality, making transcription a rewarding career for those with strong attention to detail and a dedicated work ethic.
