Founded in 1993 in West London, we have grown through referrals from leading universities and businesses worldwide. Our Story

1993: The Beginning

The Typing Works was founded by Adele Herson in West London, originally offering general secretarial services. Our transition into academic transcription began when Middlesex University commissioned Adele to transcribe a series of medical interviews. Word quickly spread, leading to rapid growth and long-standing partnerships with universities throughout the UK and internationally.

Early Growth & Expansion

As demand increased, Adele expanded the organisation with a carefully selected team of UK-based transcribers. Every team member underwent a thorough vetting process to ensure the highest levels of accuracy, reliability and confidentiality. This commitment to quality remains central to our service today.

Digital Evolution

The shift to digital recording opened new opportunities to support more clients and deliver faster, more efficient services. Embracing new technologies while maintaining human expertise allowed us to continue providing precise, context-aware transcription for a wide range of academic disciplines.

2024 – A New Chapter

In 2024, after more than 30 years at the helm, Adele stepped back to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Leadership of The Typing Works passed to Rebecca Hughes, who continues to uphold the same high standards, processes and trusted team that clients have relied on for decades.

Today

The Typing Works now provides specialist academic & business transcription to universities & companies around the world, along with additional services including translation, copy typing and multilingual transcription.

Our mission is unchanged: to provide accurate, confidential, human-led transcription with a personal and reliable service.
